A breath sound is only normal or abnormal relative to where you heard it — bronchial sounds are expected over the trachea and mean consolidation in the periphery. Decide whether each sound belongs, identify an adventitious sound from its character, timing and response to cough, run the three voice tests, and then assemble the whole constellation into a named pattern with an action attached.
Does this sound belong where you heard it?
Describe what you hear and the bench will name it
Describe every sound along four axes: location, timing in the respiratory cycle, quality, and whether it clears with coughing.
Extra features
Percussion was dull and breath sounds were bronchial at the right posterior base where they should be vesicular. Run the three confirming manoeuvres with the diaphragm over that spot, comparing each to the same site on the opposite side.
Assemble the constellation
Four findings at the same spot, on the same side. The bench names the best-fitting pattern and tells you what separates it from its neighbours.
Technique firstDiaphragm, bare skin, one full inspiration and expiration at every site.
