The Zone of Proximal Development

Vygotsky saw learning as social. Between what a child can do alone and what they can do with help lies the zone of proximal development. Pick a skill, bring in a helper, scaffold the task — then watch the whole zone slide up as the child masters it.

A zone, not a ceilingWhat a child can already do by themselves is only half the picture. Just above it sits a band of tasks they can't do alone yet—but can do with a little guidance. Vygotsky called that band the zone of proximal development. Pick a skill and step through it.
