Maternal-Newborn & Paediatric Nursing · Chapter 6

Two Patients at Once

Every birth is prepared for as two resuscitations. On one side, blood loss is quantified rather than estimated, the fundus is massaged first because tone causes most of it, and each uterotonic has a question you ask before you give it. On the other, ventilation is the intervention that matters, the saturation target climbs slowly through the first ten minutes, and every newborn dose is calculated from the kilogram weight with the arithmetic shown.

The fourth stage

Loss is measured, not eyeballed. Blood is collected in a graduated under-buttock drape and soaked materials are weighed: 1 gram of weight above dry weight counts as 1 mL of blood.
