Exotoxins vs Endotoxin

Bacteria damage the body with two very different poisons. An exotoxin is a protein that a living cell secretes. Endotoxin is the lipid A of LPS in the outer membrane of a Gram-negative cell, and it comes out only when the cell dies. Pick a toxin, then kill the cell, add heat, make a toxoid, or give antitoxin, and watch what changes.

Exotoxin is excreted, and it is a protein. Endotoxin sits in the outer membrane and comes out at the end, when a Gram-negative cell dies.
