Reading the Culture Plate

The medium you choose decides which microbes grow and what their colonies reveal. Pick a growth medium, watch the plate change, then tap a colony to read it.

Streak plate

Heavy confluent growth where streaking began · isolated colonies to read further out
Reading a colony: note its form (circular · irregular · punctate), margin (entire · undulate · lobate), elevation (flat · raised · convex), plus size, surface, and colour.
Culturing microbespick a medium
Four jobs a medium can do: General grows almost anything · Selective suppresses unwanted microbes · Differential makes groups look different · Enriched feeds fastidious organisms.
