BPH Drugs — Relax the Muscle or Shrink the Gland

An enlarged prostate squeezes the urethra two ways: a dynamic part (alpha-1 smooth-muscle tone in the prostate and bladder neck) and a static part (the sheer bulk of the gland). Each drug class attacks a different part — alpha-1 blockers relax the muscle for fast relief, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors shrink the gland over months. Tap each option and watch the urethra open.

Compare the two classes: one relaxes (fast, no size change), the other shrinks (slow, months).
