The 20 Percent Cut

Take any paragraph, count the words, and rewrite it 20 percent shorter with no loss of information. Almost all of the loss comes from run-ups, nominalizations, expletive constructions and hedges — the parts no reader was going to miss. Tap a chunk to cut it or swap it for a shorter form. Tap a green chunk and you have deleted a fact, which the counter will hold against you.
The workbench
Five real workplace sentences. Tap any chunk to apply the move; tap again to undo it.
dashed = pure deadwood, delete it blue = swap for a shorter form green = load-bearing fact
What the reader gets
