Biomedical Therapy: Matching Drug to Disorder

Biomedical (biological) therapies treat psychological disorders by acting on the body and brain — most often with psychotropic drugs that adjust specific neurotransmitters at the synapse. Tap a drug class to watch what it does to the synapse and see which disorder it treats.

Each class nudges a different neurotransmitter — that choice is what matches the drug to a disorder.

What counts as biomedical therapy? The biological approach: change brain chemistry to change symptoms. Beyond drugs it also includes electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for severe depression and newer brain stimulation methods. Drugs are by far the most common — and each class targets a particular neurotransmitter.
