The Research Process, Step by Step

Sociology is a science, and a good study follows a disciplined path — from a curious question to a published finding. Pick a study to follow, then walk the six stages. Tap any stage in the pipeline, use the rail, or step with Prev / Next.

The research pipeline

The research processpick a study, then step through the stages
1 · Choose a study to follow
2 · Step through the six stages
Why steps? Auguste Comte argued society could be studied with the rigor of the natural sciences — positivism. These six stages are how that plays out, and stage 6 loops back to stage 2: published findings become the next researcher’s starting point.
