Who Counts as Sick

Being sick is a biological fact. Being counted as sick is a social achievement — a role your society has to grant you, and a category it had to invent first. Switch the four conditions of the sick role on and off, then watch seven conditions get renamed without a single cell changing.

Why a functionalist cared. Talcott Parsons described the sick role in 1951. For him illness is a dysfunction: it withdraws a person’s labour from a system that was counting on it. So society does not simply let people be sick — it channels illness into a licensed, temporary, supervised exit with a built-in obligation to come back. Two rights, two duties, and a gatekeeper holding the pen.
