Electrochemistry Lab

Build galvanic cells from real metals and watch electrons, ions and electrode masses change; force reactions uphill with a power supply; explore ΔG = ΔH − TΔS; practise every calculation with animated worked solutions; sort the big ideas; and meet electrochemistry in the body and at home. Nothing here is graded.

Voltages use E = E° − (0.0592 V/n) log Q at 25 °C with standard reduction potentials. Each beaker holds 0.100 L. Current flows through a 5.0 Ω load; one second of animation is 1, 10 or 100 hours of cell time (Speed buttons). Overpotential, internal resistance and side reactions (such as magnesium reacting with water) are ignored.
