Cell Structure Lab

Run a virtual microscope from tissue down to ribosomes and follow a labelled protein through a pancreas cell; practise surface area to volume, magnification and scale bar math with animated worked solutions; sort organelles and cell types; and use it all on real cases. Nothing here is graded.

Simplifications: field width is the width of the viewer, taken as 200,000 µm divided by the magnification (a 20 cm wide image). Resolution limits are typical values (light about 200 nm, TEM about 2 nm for biological samples, SEM about 5 nm). Blur from the light limit is exaggerated so you can see it on a small screen. Tissue, cell and organelle sizes are typical, not measured from one specimen. The pulse-chase model is a simple chain (rough ER → Golgi → secretory vesicles → duct) with rate constants chosen to match the classic pancreas timing; the chase clock runs fast.
