Gene Regulation Lab

Run the lac operon with any sugar mix and mutation, turn the dials on a eukaryotic gene, predict operon expression for mutants and merodiploids, sort control mechanisms, and read real data. Nothing here is graded.

MeasureValue

Simplified model for learning, with time sped up. cAMP = 1 minus the glucose level. CAP occupancy rises with cAMP. The share of time the operator is free rises with lactose (allolactose) for a normal repressor. Transcription = operator free × (5% without CAP, up to 100% with CAP). Beta galactosidase activity heads toward 1000 × transcription units. Left out: inducer exclusion (glucose also limits lactose entry), the permease feedback loop, the need for some beta galactosidase to make allolactose, and the three extra operators of the real lac region.
