The Strip Draws Itself

A cardiotocograph pairs the fetal heart rate against the contraction pattern so that every deceleration can be timed against the contraction that caused it. Set the five terms and watch a real ten-minute strip appear underneath them, with the NICHD category recalculating as you go. Then name the category on seven finished strips, and decide when a labour can be listened to rather than wired.

Choose a bench

140 bpm
The mean rate over a 10-minute window excluding accelerations, decelerations and marked variability, rounded to increments of 5, requiring at least 2 identifiable minutes. Normal is 110 to 160.

Decelerations
How often?
Decelerations are classified by shape and timing, not depth. Gradual means onset to nadir of 30 seconds or more; abrupt means under 30 seconds.
