The Growth Chart: Trajectory, Correction and the Two-Line Rule

A single measurement is a data point. A plotted series is a finding. Put a child’s serial measurements on the percentile channels and the same three numbers separate a constitutionally small child who is entirely well from a child whose weight has crossed two major percentile lines downward and needs explaining. Then correct a preterm infant’s age — because plotting a former twenty-eight-week infant at chronological age manufactures a delay that does not exist.

Case

The plotted series is on the right. Seven major percentile lines are drawn — 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 97th. Count the lines the child has crossed, and in which direction.
